Modern School Stories

Inclusions and exclusions – please read before suggesting additions!

Because this bibliography extends the original material in The Encyclopaedia, in theory it only lists books written after 1996, when most of the text was completed (it took several more years for Ashgate to publish it). Here are the criteria for inclusion:

Stories should be set in girls’ schools only (no mixed schools), but day or boarding is fine, as long as the school is central. The audience should be children or young adult: adult school stories have their own article and bibliography.

All books in a series are given, with stories set in school in bold font. (The revised Encyclopaedia will probably not include all the non-school stories because of space, but web space is more or less infinite!) If a series has an overall title, the latter is provided only when it differs from titles (eg. ‘Rosewood Chronicles’, but not ‘Alice-Miranda’). If you notice that a series list is missing one or more books, please let me know.

Historical, fantasy, ballet, stage school and convent school stories have their own articles, and I’ve for those I’ve just given author names plus a cross-reference: all those bibliographies are online so you can check them there. However, if you can think of any of these by authors not listed below, please mention them anyway, because I can always check! Crime (e.g. Robin Stevens) doesn’t have its own article (the crime/school story genre is still pretty new, though growing), so those books are listed below; though they’re all set in the 1930s, they’re not really historical fiction, so I’ve included them here and provided cross-references in the Historical/Fantasy bibliography.

We’re using a (slightly vague) boundary between picture books and what teachers and librarians now call ‘chapter books’ - books for young but independent readers, from (very roughly) 6 years old. Any chapter book is fine, even if it’s short with lots of pictures; actual picture books, designed to be read to children, isn’t, and we’re omitting those.

As with all the other articles, and the alphabetical section, we’re only considering books written in English (no translations) from British and Commonwealth countries: American books are not generally included apart from any that are set in the UK.

For reasons of space (mostly) we’re not including self-published books, or, in general, books only available in electronic versions. The exceptions here are sequels to printed books, such as Liz Filleul’s Christmas Term at Cotterford, which only exists as a Kindle book, though First Term at Cotterford is printed.
